The Bagger Questions and Answers Class 9

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Has Lushkoff become a beggar by circumstance or by choice?

Answer: Lushkoff, a man in the prime of his life, found his place within the harmonious folds of the Russian choir. Far from a mere beggar of bombs, he never resorted to such desperate ways. Yet, his thirst for spirits proved his undoing, leading to his expulsion from the choir. Undeterred, he chose the beggar’s path, eschewing the toil of conventional work in favor of a different journey.

2. What reasons does he give to Sergei for his telling lies?

Answer:  Lushkoff, who had once been a singer, made a candid admission of his past deception, acknowledging that he was, indeed, a liar. He confessed to having told lies in an attempt to win the favor of others. His motive for this dishonesty was driven by the belief that if he had spoken the truth, he would have received no assistance or support. Thus, he made the decision to resort to falsehoods.

3. Is Lushkoff a willing worker? Why, then, does he agree to chop wood for Sergei?

Answer: No , Lushkoff was far from being an eager worker. However, due to feelings of pride and shame, he reluctantly consented to chop wood for Sergei. He found himself ensnared by his own prior statements, unable to escape the commitment. His physical strength had diminished as a result of excessive drinking, rendering him in poor health and devoid of any desire to engage in laborious tasks.

4. Sergei says, “I am happy that my words have taken effect.” Why does he say so? Is he right in saying this?

Answer: Sergei’s words stemmed from his desire to guide Lushkoff onto a more virtuous path. Having detected Lushkoff’s deception, he provided the necessary encouragement to motivate him to work. Sergei entrusted him with tasks and compensated him accordingly. Two years later, Sergei encountered Lushkoff again, only to discover that he had transformed his life and become a notary earning a monthly wage of thirty-five roubles. Sergei rightfully attributed this positive change to the impact of his own words and influence. Undoubtedly, without Sergei’s intervention, Lushkoff might have remained mired in lies and continued to rely on begging for survival.

5. Lushkoff is earning thirty five roubles a month. How is he obliged to Sergei for this?

Answer: Earning thirty-five rubles per month now, Lushkoff owes a debt of gratitude to Sergei. Had he not sought Sergei’s assistance, he might have remained stuck in the cycle of mendacity, pretending to be a teacher or a student while continuing to beg for a living. Fortunately, Sergei extended a helping hand, offering Lushkoff employment that lifted him out of his dire situation.

6. During their conversation Lushkoff reveals that Sergei’s cook, Olga, is responsible for the positive change in him. How has Olga saved Lushkoff?

Answer: Sergei brought Lushkoff to his residence and assigned him the task of chopping wood. He instructed Olga, his cook, to accompany Lushkoff to the woods and oversee the wood chopping. However, when Lushkoff eventually became a notary and had an unexpected encounter with Sergei, he revealed that it was actually Ciga who had been doing the wood chopping all along. Ciga had taken pity on Lushkoff and, out of kindness, performed the task herself instead of letting him do it.

This compassionate gesture from Ciga had a profound impact on Lushkoff, transforming him into a better person and enabling him to earn his livelihood with dignity.
