  • The 1850s Captain Swing Riots lasted for two consecutive years in England.
  • In these riots, poor laborers broke the machines of the rich tenants.
  • Captain Swing- was a mythical name.
  • Commons- The land on which all the villagers had the right.

  • By the end of the 18th century, large landowners started the captivity of the Sangsad land (Commons) from the orders of the Government of England.
  • Importance of Commons in the lives of poor farmers: –

1. Commons’s land was shared. Any farmer could farm it there.

2. People used to feed their cattle on it.

  • The association of opium cultivation in India is related to the mutual trade of Britain and China.
  • England used to trade tea from China, but England did not have anything that they could easily sell in the Chinese market.
  • Instead of tea, the merchants of England had to pay silver coins. The treasure was empty.
  • Opium was a good option for being sold in China, which was used as a medicine.
  • Encouraged by the advancement of the farmers by giving advance money to the poor farmers by the British.
  • Farmers suffered a lot from opium cultivation.
